Town Hall

The Varenna Town Hall, located in the heart of the municipality of Varenna, plays a central role in the administration of the local community.
This building, although lacking significant historical significance, is a testament to modern, functional architecture.
Its relatively recent construction is matched by an understated, rationalist design featuring a well-maintained facade.

The Council Chamber inside the building, in addition to serving as a meeting place for the City Council, is also a solemn environment dedicated to special events,
just like wedding celebrations.
This space holds special significance, as it was named after Giorgio La Pira, a prominent Italian political figure.
Giorgio La Pira is remembered not only for his role in Italian politics but also for his deep civic commitment and tireless struggle for peace and social justice.
The decision to dedicate the hall to Giorgio La Pira is a tribute to the legacy of this influential figure and is a constant reminder of the values of peace, solidarity and social equality that he embodied.

In summary, Varenna City Hall, although not distinguished by its history, is an example of contemporary and functional architecture.
The Council Chamber named after Giorgio La Pira adds a touch of meaning and solemnity to the building, celebrating a man who marked Italian history with his commitment to peace and justice.

Villa Monastero

Born from the transformation of an ancient women's monastery of Cistercian foundation dedicated to the Virgin Mary and erected at the end of the 12th century, the Villa saw the succession of different owners-from the Mornico people of Valsassina to the German Walter Kees, finally arriving at the Swiss-born De Marchi people of Milan (to whom the Multipurpose Hall in Varenna is named)-who were responsible for the costly building and renovation works that gave it over time its current eclectic dwelling appearance.

In 1939 it was donated to the state, by the De Marchi family, with the obligation to preserve it and use it for cultural institutions of public benefit; thus it was that fourteen years later, in 1953, the conference center was built, which still today hosts conferences of a cultural and scientific nature, including the summer courses of the prestigious Italian School of Physics.

Finally, in 2003, the House Museum was built, in whose rooms -14, to be exact, distributed between the ground and second floors - the museum itinerary is articulated and unfolds, during which visitors have the opportunity to admire original decorations and furniture. Among the most important rooms are the Black Room, in neo-Renaissance style; the Bigliardo Room, with decorated capitals and various marbles; the Red Room, with neo-Rococo tapestries and furnishings; and the Fermi Room, in which physicist Enrico Fermi gave his last lectures in 1954.

To crown this splendid building we find the enchanting Botanical Garden, rich in rare and exotic botanical species kept lush here by the mild climate typical of the lake.
The complex consists of alternating terraces, laid out along a path of about two kilometers that reaches the nearby hamlet of Fiumelatte.

Colors and scents envelop this relaxing walk along the lakeshore, where palms, citrus trees, oleanders, agaves, yuccas, English Roses, multicolored Peonies, and many other collections and rarities, brighten the sight and soul of the many visitors who each year are fortunate enough to enjoy a few hours of tranquility in this peaceful oasis.

Also of remarkable beauty are the architectural decorations scattered here and there along the entire route: statues, small temples, reliefs and fountains accompany the visitor to the Kaffe-haus, located at the extreme southern edge.

Among the various works that corollate the park, "La Clemenza di Tito" certainly stands out, a sculptural group created by neoclassical artist Giovanni Battista Comolli, the author's last work before his death, placed here in the early 1900s.

Villa Monastero is owned by the Province of Lecco

Villa Cipressi

A magnificent complex of buildings and gardens, built and constructed between the 1400s and 1800s, the Villa today represents a perfect and harmonious blend of the ancient and the modern functionality, made possible by a careful restoration that has seen the pre-existing architectural lines maintained.

At first part of the Serponti family's estate, the structure later passed into the hands of several prestigious figures, such as Baron Isimbardi, who in the early 19th century implanted there a laboratory of the Milan Mint, of which he was Director; the Andreossi family, Sir Sulton, the English Astleys and, finally, the Accame family.

In 1980 it was purchased by the people of Varenna, through a public and voluntary subscription, for public use.
Currently owned by the City of Varenna, it is now used as a renowned hotel/restaurant-convention center. A municipal venue for civil ceremony weddings, each year it hosts dozens and dozens of weddings of couples from all over the world.
The gardens of Villa Cipressi, which are open to the public, are an architectural masterpiece characterized by stairways and terraces sloping down to the lake; numerous plant species are present, including, for example, the 'American agave, which flourishes wildly here, the araucaria, the strawberry tree (or Patriots' plant), the myrtle, the tamarisk, the cypress, and the diospiro, to name but a few.

Numerous collections of seasonal species.
